We arrived at our starting point just as the track setter started out up the road toward Lake Louise. As a result the earlier going couldn't have been better. Once we climbed the hill to the east of the Great Divide, the track deteriorated due to the heavy traffic. Coverage remained good and I never felt pavement under my poles all day. There were numerous groups getting an early season start. Most were competent, savvy skiers and there was no problem with dodging each other. The morning was sunny, calm and fairly mild at perhaps minus 5.
We stopped for lunch at the Louise end of the trail in a sunny field. It was tough getting started after a 45 minute break.
The trip took about 3:45 hours including lunch. Distance was 20km, with 210m elevation gain (85m net).
