Smoke dominated this Sunday. We were one day too late as smoke from burning fires in the NW USA rolled in the previous evening to mask any distant views that we hoped for this day. However, some larches were a beautiful yellow, it was warm, no wind and excellent company for this hike up to east Panorama Ridge via Taylor Lake.
Since everyone arrived early, we set off at 8.50am along the dry trail to Taylor lake, which we reached about 2 hours later for a nice break. We then wound up through the campground following a flagged thin trail signed to Moraine Lake for about 15 minutes before cutting off left to Panorama Meadows. It was slightly damp here underfoot and the larches were mostly green but showing hints of yellow.
We then went offtrail towards Panorama Ridge following faint trails and stumbled on an old cabin (actually 2) at the base of the ridge. On my many visits both summer and winter to this area, I've never realized that this cabin existed. Definitely in need of a "fix up".
Descent was approximately the same and we took another good break at Taylor Lake campground at 3.00pm before the long walk out to the cars by 5.00pm. The drive back to Calgary was busy but uneventful.
The larches were turning but today was a bit early and they should be better in about a week's time. Stats: 19km, 1070m elevation gain in 8hrs car to car. IMO very pleasant.
