Three other Ramblers, like me, were looking for a short ski day out in the mountains away from the busy round of family and friends that comes at this Christmas time. I had n't done this trip in quite a while so I thought the good trail signage is new but maybe it is n't that new?

New(?) improved signage on the trail to Chester lake

Yes a snowshoer had been up the ski trail but had kept off the track! Going on my very poor memory I branched to the left off the Chester lake trail for Elephant rocks far too early but realised my mistake when we broke out of the bush to see the flats of lower 3 Lakes valley. Fortunately Carl, Damian and Rolf were OK with a bit of unnecessary detouring and bushwhacking. Thanks guys! Despite this detour we made Elephant rocks around noon for lunch.

After lunch with some of the group  having family and friend evening commitments and being aware of the incoming storm we headed down . Your scribe fell twice on descent failing to make a sharp bend and, more embarrassing, hitting something (my lame excuse) on a not steep part just above the loop junction with a group of AT skiers looking on! The others of the group enjoyed the descent. I briefly stayed pace with Rolf long enough to admire his nice tele turns.

Damian and I however could n't keep up to Carl and Rolf on our skinnier gear.

We were back at Rolf's truck just after 1:00 pm so a short day but it was good to get out and after the drought, as we all noted, skiing on fresh fallen snow was really nice. We were back in the city just after 3:00 pm. There had maybe been 1-2 cms of new snow during our ski but it looked like a little more than that by the time we got back to Calgary. I think it was good to be early on this day. Thanks everyone for coming out, Rolf for driving and Carl for the photos from John.
