Mt Field Ski Mountaineering on 18-Mar-2006
The fact that the only photo I took on this trip was from the the trail head parking lot sums up the scenic opportunites we had. Indeed lack of scenic visibility was a primary factor in us deciding to turn around 200-250 metres below the summit around 3:00 pm. The estimate of our elevation is very rough as we could see very little! After turning around after a challenging climb of, probably, over 1000 metres our challenges continued as we tried to make nice turns in terrain that unexpectedly came up to greet you in the flat light! Lower down as the trees thickened up the visibility improved and there was some reasonable skiing. The area has been skied quite a bit but there was some powder still to be had. There were two parties in the area with us on Saturday - one of seven or eight and one of two. It was quite a bit warmer on the west side of the divide and snow was starting to ball up and stick at lower elevations. These snow conditions made it a bit of a grunt along the road but we got back to the trailhead around 5:30 pm (departure was around 10:00 am). As it had done all day, off and on, the weather did start to clear again as we were packing up. To round off the day we had a convivial supper at Evvia in Canmore with a fun and lively group of: David, Danielle, Denis, Gerald and scribe John. Thanks everyone for coming out and "enjoying" less than the best weather and conditions.
This probably breaks a trip report rule as the photo was taken from a parking lot ... but it was the only one I took:
