Pocaterra Ridge traverse S to N Off-Trail hike on 23-Sep-2026

Upon learning that the new Pocaterra Cirque trail was finally open after the extended summer closure of the area, we had to take advantage of that, and of near-peak larch season. The new trail provides much improved and welcome access into the cirque, with a loop option around the cirque that would have to wait for another day. Also- a marked and improved approach trail makes quick work of getting onto the ridge, where the on-going route was in good shape. After the long descent at the north end, a bit of muddling at streamside where no great crossing was found led to most simply wading across in boots and pushing through a short tunnel in the willows before picking up the trail out to the highway. Despite the weather up high feeling decidedly fall-like, several breaks along the way were enjoyed- no point rushing on a fine afternoon. Moving on towards the next two highpoints. A tiny bit of snow was of no concern, other than for retriever Piper who enjoyed a good roll.

The last stretch above treeline was raked by cool, very fall-like winds, but we found a nice sheltered spot for an afternoon tea break.
