Our group of 9 set off from Wasootch parking lot at 9.30am in cool, overcast conditions. It was a pleasant 20 minute hike along the connector trail to the Porcupine Creek bridge. Here we made the decision to hike up the left side of the creek and traverse the easy angled rock alongside the creek. This proved to be a bit more challenging than expected due to the high flow of the creek, but all participants safely traversed the two tricky areas.
Soon we were on the ridge itself, following a trail up through the trees, then onto the open ridge with some magnificent gnarled trees, including some very healthy looking white bark pine trees. As we neared the top of the first ridge, it became obvious that the weather was changing, so we climbed and traversed a bit further to have lunch in a sheltered spot in the trees about 100m below the high point. After lunch most of the group decided to head down and get off the ridge before the rain started. The other 3 made a quick dash for the high point and got a good view of the rain heading our way. We all met up back at the Porcupine creek bridge as the rain came down a bit harder. However by the time we got back to the vehicles around 3pm the rain was over and the sun was out. The Porcupine Ridge trip is highly recommended with lots of variety in the terrain and terrific views. Stats: 5 1/2 hours, 600m.
Many thanks to the participants for joining me on my first trip as a provisional coordinator: Rosanne, Philip, Jim, Susan, Bill, Jeannette, Clifton, Kate and me Evan Jones (scribe and pictures)
