Junction Hill snow hike Off-Trail hike on 17-Jan-2026

A perfect day! I was surprised that more people didn't sign up, given the great conditions. We started up the west ridge of the horseshoe under a brilliant blue sky and very quickly took off extra layers as we climbed. The group kindly agreed to tackle the steep bonus hill for early views, and then a short bushwhack brought us to the postholey trail (what a workout - we were grateful to those who had broken trail).

The summit views were excellent and, by moving just a couple of metres, we were able to enjoy lunch at the top out of most of the wind. The trail down the east ridge turned out to be well-broken, so we completed the horseshoe clockwise in temperatures so warm that I was down to a t-shirt. 9 km/730m in 4.5 hours (including lunch).
