Brewster Creek beyond Sundance Lodge to Fatigue Creek Junction Trail

Participants: Mike (coordinator & reporter), Carl, Ulrike, Tana

We departed from the trailhead at 10am under cloudy skies and 0C. The forecast was for sun, but it remained cloudy all day except for the odd short sunny break. We were concerned about snow conditions with Canmore having experienced +7C the previous day and the same forecast for today. Fortunately the lack of sun kept things relatively cool with the temperature reaching only +2C at Sundance Lodge and staying there the rest of the day until we arrived back at the trailhead at 3:30pm. Inbound to Sundance Lodge, the snow was providing enough grip for most of us on either skin skis or wax. After lunch, we continued from Sundance Lodge for about 1.5km to the Bw10 Brewster Creek campground which required trailbreaking and additional skins. Ski penetration varied from 20-40cm. Our return to the trailhead went fairly quickly, but the snow was now getting glazed from the heat which made the uphill sections slippery for those who were relying on wax grip.

Due to the lack of views and skiing on a rough snowmobile toboggan-packed trail, the group consensus was that this was a trip worth doing at least once a decade.
