Saddleback - Fairview Mtn Off-Trail hike on 28-Oct-2025

This hike was new to 3 of us (including the coordinator), and the fourth person had never done it in snow. I think that we all agreed that "Fair"view is an understatement: the views are stunning, especially with fresh snow on the mountains.

The trail was well-packed and we were glad to not have to break trail because the snow was 1 foot deep in the trees. We emerged into the sunshine at Saddleback Pass, and expected the climb up the mountain to be fairly straightforward given that a larger group was ahead of us. However, the high winds and fresh snow from the previous two days had caused some deep drifts, obliterating the trail and forcing us onto loose rocks and eventually a sweeping traverse to gain the ridge on deep but stable snow. But we made it without too much difficulty and everyone was still grinning as we topped out to the fabulous views. Even the wind was relatively light so we could enjoy lunch (although it was definitely cold).

Return was quicker, although we were on a different route and lost the trail again, finally regaining it after a hazardous section with hidden holes under the snow and rocks. Another short break at Saddleback Pass, and then we descended on easy trail to admire the view from the lakeshore amid not-too-many tourists.
