We started from the Sparrowhawk Day Use Area at 8:30 a.m. The route to Sparrowhawk followed part of the Read’s Ridge approach. The day offered clear blue skies over Spray Lakes, but unfortunately a stubborn cloud clung to the summit block, accompanied by a cold wind that stayed with us throughout the trip and was very strong near the summit block.
The route gains 1,415 m in approximately 11 km. Everyone maintained a brisk pace to stay warm. Fortunately, the group consisted of strong and experienced hikers.
The terrain was most challenging near the summit block. Very loose rock and shifting scree made for a very difficult final ascent. We avoided ascending via the main scree trail as it was too steep and unstable, but it did serve well for our descent. Helmets are advisable for this scramble due to rock hazards.
Despite the lack of summit views, the group enjoyed great views of Spray Lakes and larch trees. We reached the cars again by 3:30p.m.
This trip is best saved for a clear, calm day when the rewarding views can match the effort of the steep climb.
