Helena Ridge (north and centre summits) Off-Trail hike on 23-Aug-2025

After three backpacking trips in a row with clouds, rain, and mud (so much mud!), it was a treat to finally enjoy blue skies, warm temperatures, and stellar views (among the best of the year, in my opinion).
The price to pay for those views is a long trudge through forest, but you quickly forget about that part once you reach the open country at Tower and Rockbound Lakes. The steep climbs after that point propel you into spectacular landscapes, and we enjoyed the views from both the north and centre high points of the ridge. It was a pleasant surprise that only one other group ventured up that high on a Saturday.
After descending back to Rockbound Lake for another lengthy break (while watching an osprey hunting), we turned into walking machines for the seemingly endless (but fortunately shady) exit back to the cars. 23 km/1500m/9 hours.
What a fantastic day, and such a pleasure to share it with a great group. Thanks to Tina and Ulli for sending photos.
