Charles Stewart South peak Scramble on 20-May-2025

Participants: Sim, Bill, Dave, Peter, Margot, Stephanie

On the drive in from Calgary the weather was not looking promising, but to our surprise as we made our way into Canmore the sky turned to a lovely blue, and it was just our luck.

We grabbed our gear and made our way towards the creek bed (a note, on the way back we discovered that much of the lower Stoneworks Canyon can be avoided by a lovely trail through the trees on the right hand-side when ascending). The canyon was throughly enjoyable and made for a fun way to start and end the day.

After making our way through the canyon and creek, we arrived at the 1.25km of scree, loose rock, and slab which we needed to ascend to make it to the summit ridge. At this point, it was a pick your own poison for the route to the summit ridge. Some chose to stick to rock as much as possible, while others kicked stepped in the snow (and even used an ice axe) to make it up to the ridge.

Once on the summit we enjoyed a short lunch, and the skies cleared for us to bask in the sunshine and the suns warming rays. We were even lucky enough to have almost no wind while we spent our lunch at the summit.

Sadly, after almost instantly leaving the summit so too did the sun, and we were met with a snow squall as we made our way down off the ridge and slope of the mountain where this time we all used the snow to our advantage to speed our decent and get us out of the wind.

After making it off the ridge and slope we paused for a quick breather, where we were once again greeted by the warming suns rays which remained with us until the end of the hike.

Thanks for all who joined the trip, it was a very enjoyable day!
