Mesa (Square) Butte Trail hike on 10-Apr-2025

Another lovely spring day in the foothills! We had warm temperatures, light wind and great mountain views. The trail had some dry stretches, but a lot of it was ice or mud. We saw lots of birds, including a few hairy woodpeckers, chickadees and robins. There were a few clumps of crocus on the final stretch of trail leading to the summit, and many more not quite in bloom.

We had lunch at the summit, where there are benches and a picnic table, then returned along the same trail to the cars, enjoying the views going that direction and avoiding the muddy valley bottom of the loop hike.
