Mt Burke Trail hike on 1-Sep-2024

It was a nice hiking temperature as we set off from the trailhead and the forested lower trail provided welcome shade, especially on the steeper section up the cutline:

We made good time and took an extended break when the views to the west opened up at the treeline:

There was a bit of a cooling breeze as we went up the open slopes and across the narrow rocky ridge:

We arrived at the summit after 2.5 hours (including stoppage time) where there were panoramic views east and west; the atmosphere was clear enough that Calgary's downtown could be made out in the distance. Lots of peak spotting was done and there was time for making phone calls and a group photo:

A few other hikers showed up plus a couple of cyclists who had lugged their bikes to the top, they went hurtling down the rough rocky trail before we started our descent. It was heating up by this time so the forest trail was again welcomed for an escape from the direct sunlight. On the lower section half the group returned via the cutline while the rest went via the old section of trail which is longer, less steep and has no uphill. It was at its warmest when we arrived back at the cars so most took a stop to cool off our hot feet in Cataract Creek:

Eight then stopped on the ride home to dine at the Black Diamond Hotel and undertake electrolyte replacement.

Thanks to a convivial group of participants: Rosanne, Philip, Bill (photos), Barbara, Arnold, Alda, Aldis, Sonja, Teresa (photos), Cathy (photo) and Paul for joining me, Ron C/S/P, on an excellent day in the south Highwood area.
