Niblock-Whyte col Ski Mountaineering on 3-Apr-2004
Terrific weather was ahead of us on this day. We started our ski at a pullout just east of the Great Divide on the #1 highway. From this spot on the north side of the road we walked under the bridge, donned skis, and headed west across some open areas. We regrouped at the Great Divide marker on the 1A highway.

From here we took a left up “Divide Creek” and straight up the creek until tree line, with minimal elevation gain. Now in the alpine, the way steepens. On a clear, calm, and mild day like this the awesome beauty of this narrow valley is on full display. There are basically two ways up, one hugs the right and the other the valley’s left. The route on the right was chosen on this occasion and we made good time. At the rockband below the glacier ahead, the way steepens still more. The climb up the bowl to the col is steady, the scenery is terrific. At the col we took in the great views, and our lavish luncheon (by gad, some even had Smarties in their gorp).

Some then proceeded to bag Mt. Niblock before the long ski down! The snow on the downhill was pretty good and in no time we were back in the trees and down into the rather icy snow of “Divide Creek”. The open areas of the route’s origin were now going isothermal but we only went in at a place or two. Thanks to Dave for another great trip call, and kudos to everyone, but especially Sim, for the input on the route finding. Trip participants: Alda, Sim.
