As a comparison to the success of movie sequels this past year, this trip was actually a sequel to Jack's first Rambler ascent of Howard Douglas three days prior, when the group (on route home) agreed to accompany me if I could get tickets on the shuttle bus to Moraine Lake. While the sequel lacked the intensity of adventurers tackling challenging terrain, and setting a new bar to which we might continue to refer to in future (ie..there was a lot of loose rock, but still nothing like Howard Douglas!") it was a happy conclusion where everyone enjoyed riding off into the sunset together in the Glasswick-mobile (John's 7 passenger van).
We left the city shortly after 6am and found the Lake Louise Ski Resort parking surprisingly full when we arrived. The shuttle system was well organized with no real line-ups and between waiting for the bus to fill and the drive from there to the trailhead, we were on the trail by about 9am. Following the easy switchbacks, and well marked trail pretty much to the summit, we arrived at 12:02 (it was noted that I failed to get us there by noon for lunch). The weather was perfect so we enjoyed a long lunch and a few breaks both up and down and were back to the the shuttle by about 3:30pm.
Note for future trips: the rock in the final gullies of this scramble is very loose and we all agreed helmets should be mandatory.
Thanks to everyone for agreeing to test the shuttle system and join me on this scenic and relatively straightforward adventure: Sim, Bill, Jack, Jane, John. Special thanks to Bill, not only for his photos, but for being the live version of the PeakFinder app.
