Four of us set off under partly cloudy skies shortly before 10 am. The views to the north along the Upper Kananaskis Lake were stunning and the cool air a relief from Calgary's recent heat.
The broad trail was traffic free on up to Rawson Lake. There were three fishing from "belly boats" on the lake and several more from the shore. The meadows were full of flowers and the scree slopes home to busily farming pikas.
We headed to the far end of the lake for our lunch break where we sought shelter from a cool brisk wind. Out came the spare clothing! We were entertained by a golden mantled ground squirrel who we guessed was attracted by Rosanne's nut bread.
We retraced our steps along the lakeshore passing though avalanche remains. I was interested in noting small shrub sized spruce, roots and all, next to the shore.
There was a lot of traffic on the way back to the cars, many families with small children, dogs, fishing poles, etc. Perhaps some were there because the bear ban had been lifted Monday.
Thanks to all participants: Rosanne,Jim & Deanfor their company on a relaxed day in the mountains.
