Tent Ridge Horseshoe "is one of the most enjoyable ridge walks you'll ever do". So says, Gillean Daffern and we have to agree. What made it even more enjoyable on the day before the fall equinox were the perfect conditions.---sunny, windless and cool hiking temperature. We didn't want it to end.
The first skiff of snow this season, for many of us, announces---gently---that we can start adding icers, down sweaters and hot tea to our packs.
As we made our way through the Monica Basin, we could see the gullies where avalanches (one spring one member counted ten) make this pretty much a summer hike.
After the steep ascent to the ridge, there were a few scrambly bits with one in particular that most tackled head on. Even with this scramble, there were optional routes that the Ramblers could take.
Heading south we had a spectacular view of the various peaks including The Fist, Smuts, Birdwood and Commonwealth Peak. No one had their Peak finder available, so there was some discussion as to which peak was which, except for The Fist, which is quite obvious.
Of course, it is larch season and we were looking for The Color, however, most of the trees seemed reluctant for the summer to end...yet, but there was one little larch that was starting to show its fall colors.
We had a leisurely lunch at The Hub, which is at the north part of the U of the horseshoe. It was sunny, warm and windless, the air clean and clear--a perfect fall day.
Along the north arm of the horseshoe to Tent Ridge summit we could see across the valley the trail that we had navigated and at least 5 lakes including the Spray Lakes Reservoir.
Here is the official photo of the Ramblers that had a fabulous day on the Tent Ridge Horseshoe hike of September 21, 2022.
