Waputik Peak Scramble on 6-Aug-2022
The challenge was sustained but views made it worthwhile on this alleged obscure peak. This was Carl's third time to Waputik and kudos to him, you should go there to see what I mean.
We hiked along Bath Creek for about 5.5 km and this area of the park truly is beautiful. It reminded me of backpacking the North Coast Trail of Vancouver Island. Some sections were easy travel along the shore while others forced you inland to bushwhack around the creek's steep bank. After a few hours we came to a bolder field that was the start of an avalanche gully we would ascend. A break was warranted here and as I looked up at the slope, my thought was it looks better than Nose Hill.
It was steep with lose rock, typical terrain in the Canadian Rockies. On the way up Carl recommended veering left toward the trees, which I discovered was the better way to go. Others chose a different way and apparently for them the struggle was real. Once we reached the ridge, travel became easier on a broad plateau that led to the summit base. We took advantage of snow patches that littered the alpine.
Reaching the top was our reward. It was outstanding with a panorama view that included Mt Victoria, Hector Lake and more. We layered up as the air was quite cool despite being in the heat of summer. On the way down we opted to stay right closer to the trees and endured the bushwhack out.
P.S. When I saw Gerald had posted his trip my first thought was "darn, I wish I could go." I know team duo can be a lot of fun.
Thank you Damian, Zorica, Teresa, Dana, and Carl for joining me Christine c/s/p
