Urban Hike - South Calgary Trail Hike on 8-Feb-2004

Two Ramblers met me at the Second Cup in Signal Hill Shopping centre to discuss trip options. It was decided to head to North Glenmore Park's 37th Street parking lot and hike the Weaselhead Flats before lunch and maybe the Jackrabbit Trail after lunch. However the Weaselhead Flats hike took a little longer than planned due to the coordinator's desire to add an off-trail element to the hike and do a little exploring of the hinterlands. The other two hikers decided that the Flats were enough for the day and declined the opportunity to join the coordinator on the Jackrabbit Trail. Though the Weaselhead Flats offer an enjoyable enough hike, the true gem of Glenmore Park is the Jackrabbit Trail which runs through tall timber along the south shore of the reservoir, west of the sailing club and below the bicycle/pedestrian walkway. With glimpses of the reservoir between the tall trees and nary a soul sharing the path with me, it was a truly delightful experience and difficult to believe it is actually still in the city.

Overall the paths along both trails were easily hiked with very little ice and a good covering of packed snow offered excellent traction.
