Ten Ramblers and one guest from down under left the the trailhead at 9:15 AM and headed up the steep Mount Baldy trail. Higher up the group had to make decision to take the OT5 bypass or the scramble route up the ridge. Three chose the bypass and the rest donned helmets and start up the scramble route.
The scramble route was dry and totally snow free, allowing for safe and enjoyable scrambling. We all regrouped at the base of the summit block. The summit block was covered with 5-10 cm of new snow from the day before.
The guest and his sponsor chose to not continue on to the summit of Mount Baldy. The rest of the group donned microspikes and headed up the summit block.
No difficulties were encountered on the summit block and nine Ramblers reached the summit two and a half hours after leaving the trailhead. The group settled in on the windless summit and had a long lunch while enjoying the views.
A quick descent of the summit block brought us back to the top of the scramble route.
Some scrambled the whole route down, some part of the route and other took the bypass option.
Back in the trees we caught up to the guest and his sponsor. After a short debrief back at the vehicles, we all said our farewells and headed home (7 to Calgary and 4 to Canmore )
Thanks to Gary, Phyllis, Inge, Clifton, Bruce, Vi, Cathy, Barbara, Michael and guest Peter Long for their great company and for joining me Kevin (S/C) on a very enjoyable day in the front range of the Rockies.
