Paradise Valley (Giant Steps) Trail Skiing on 9-Feb-2003
The occasionally sun dappled south western aspect of Mount Temple and the spires and pinnacles of Eiffel peak and Sentinel pass provided the surroundings. Dave, John and Anne provided good company for each other and the Giant steps provided the objective on an enjoyable ski tour up Paradise Valley on Sunday.Leaving the Moraine Lake road parking lot shortly before 10:00 am we shared the lower section of the Paradise valley trails with several other larger club groups. Beyond the Lake Annette trail junction, however, we had the trail to ourselves. The railings of the third bridge across Paradise creek provided a scenic rest spot for lunch around 1:00 pm. After the fourth bridge the trail became steeper then flattened out again before running out into a large open meadow. The meadow provided open views around the head of the valley but, as they had been all day, Mount Hungabee and the south west side of the valley were in cloud but views of Temple, Sentinel, Eiffel Peak and Wasatch more than compensated. On the way back we branched off on a fairly tight trail through trees down a side hill to the Giant steps. The run back to the parking lot was completed in just over 90 minutes getting back around 4:00 pm.On the way back, at the Drake in Canmore, we compared notes on the improving snow conditions in the mountains with a party who had been to Healy pass. Conditions were not nearly as good on the road back to Calgary, which had not enjoyed the weather we had, with snow starting as we left the mountains and staying with us all the way home.
