Mt Rundle- First Peak 048675 Scramble on 4-Jun-2015

Four hardy Ramblers left from the Bow Falls parking lot about 9am following the horse trail on the north side of the Spray River. We branched off on the Rundle trail which is well-marked, then up the switchbacks. At the last switchback is a large chair-rock,

then about 100m beyond that is the junction with the trail up peak 048675, marked by a hiking sign on a tree.

The trail is partially blocked by a fallen tree at the junction. The trail then is fairly steep until you get close to the large prominent cliff.

We went too high, and ended up very close to this large cliff band,

then had to descend 50 or 60m and cross a side hill. The gap through the cliff band is a long way to climber's right (estimated half a kilometer). On the way back we found the correct trail which traverses the side-slope well below (30-40m vertical) the cliff band and goes through the trees.

A good trail crosses this slope below the cliff bands (which we missed on the way up)

The trail is marked by two small cairns at the west end but we had ignored these on the way up.

The gap in the cliff band is fairly steep and slabby and is the only place where this is an SC5, otherwise it might be an OT5.

We were at the summit by 1:45pm and after spending half an hour enjoying the views started down.

The descent went quickly and we were back at the car by shortly after 5pm - a trip of 15km and 1450m.

The coordinator has always thought of this peak as Rundle Peak XI counting from the Canmore end of the mountain, but there does not seem to be any official naming.

Thanks to John, Celine, and Damian for joining me c/s Clifton on this pleasant scramble.
