The day starts with a bike trip from the Mt Shark trailhead across and down to the Spray River bridge, around to the Bryant Creek bridge and then along the Spray reservoir to the Turbulent Creek bridge. The trail is good all the way. We left the bikes at the bridge, then continued along the reservoir until we were directly south of Mt Fortune. Steep flower covered slopes with some deadfall led to the summit. While not far above treeline at 2332 m, great views were had of the peaks from Mt Sparrowhawk around to the Royal group.
A climb up the ridge to a pair of higher summits, gave us a view of our second objective, Mt Turbulent.
The ridge provides an excellent traverse.
Along the way, a few plants of the rare Rocky Mountain Campion (Silene hitchguirei) were found.
Further along, the ridge descends and a traverse is made into the hanging valley below Mt Turbulent. The valley contains two good sized tarns and provides much-needed water.
The slopes up Mt Turbulent were still snow covered to the south and provided an easy route to the top.
Mt Assiniboine seemed very close. Amazing to think it was still 1000 m higher than we were..
The view back down the valley showed Mt Fortune in the distance.
On the descent, the snow again provided a welcome alternative to the scree. We dropped out of the hanging valley to upper Turbulent Creek, and then followed game trails back to the road. Turbulent Creek cuts through a canyon just above the road, and goes over a substantial waterfall.
In spite of the steep climb back up to the Mt Shark area, we were glad to have the bikes on the return.
Thanks to Alda, Sim. Arnold and Doug for joining me on this trip.
The trip was 37 km in length (bike 20, hike 17) and 1815 m of elevation gain (bike 220, hike 1595).
