Kananaskis Peak via Bob Spirko route Scramble on 8-Jun-2014
Kananaskis Peak sees a lot less visits than most of the Peaks along Hwy 40 - this probably due to the fact that there is no access trail into the peak. Only one of the eight ramblers on this trip had done the peak before, and that was by a different route. We headed up the Wasootch Peak trail for a little over a kilometre before dropping down through the trees and a cut in the cliff bands to the creek. There is a very nice medium size waterfall at this point which one can climb up into the inside of.

Looking West from inside the waterfall The next 2 km up the drainage involved 'creek bashing' as the game trails along the edges of the creek had been blasted away by last year's June floods. Although requiring a slower pace and more effort, no obstacles of significance were encountered.

Clifton 'enjoying' the creek bashing After a short break the group headed up a wide gully to the col on the ridge. The footing up the slope was actually quite good, consisting of vegetation and solid rock and minimal scree. We took another break at the col to enjoy the views and let everyone catch up.

Snack break at the top of the col The traverse along the ridge to the the summit was very enjoyable - great views and good rock on the scramble sections.

Susan and Clifton heading towards the summit The ridge narrows just before the summit with some exposure. We all enjoyed a long leisurely lunch in the sun on the summit.

Eight Ramblers on the summit of Kananaskis Peak Our descent route to the creek drainage was down a shale scree slope (good footing) to the snow below.

Descending into the drainage below Wasootch Peak Most of us followed the creek back down to the water fall before making a short climb back up from the creek bottom to the Wasootch trail. Two of the group choose to angle up in the upper creek bed and hit the trail higher up. Thanks to David, Clifton, Manfred, Susan, Gary, Damian and Bill for joining me Kevin (C/S) on this exploratory trip to Kananaskis Peak. Total distance 8.2 km, net elevation gain 975 m and total time 6 hours
