Wolverine Slopes Off-Trail Skiing on 6-Feb-2014

After seeing the Environment Canada weather forecast with a -41°C extreme wind chill warning we huddled in Laggan's to discuss options. It looks like my Subaru thermometer will not register below -30°C as it did not move and we checked at the info centre - it was -33°C. We decided we would try going up to Temple lodge where we could seek shelter if necessary and maybe continue to Wolverine valley if we felt the temperature acceptable. The avy report was more encouraging than Environment Canada mentioning no wind and "warm-ish"(!!??!!) temperatures.

After the boring, shady and "cold-ish" trip to above Temple lodge we had a check and decided to keep going. Once we got into the sunshine of the Wolverine valley it turned out to be a nice day.

We had lunch on the ridge in no wind and bright sunshine and the temperature was quite comfortable - I am guessing it was around -14°C with nice views all around.

We could see Mount Field and it's ascent route in shade and felt we had made a good decision. The snow on the north east side of the ridge was quite good for the two runs we did.

Thanks to David and Kevin who encouraged wimpy coordinator John to keep going to the fine view and sunshine - a better day than I expected.
