Mt Jimmy Junior Off-Trail Skiing on 16-Apr-2013
We had a fabulous day. This trip should certainly be added to the regular Rambler repertoire. Sunny with some clouds.
We set out at 10 am from the Num-ti-jah parking lot with our destination in clear view.

Jimmy Junior (snowy) and Jimmy Simpson (rocky)We followed an existing up track that must have been put in by two skiers on the weekend. It did not go as far north as the avalanche gully, instead stayed in the trees on the ridge beside it. This worked quite well although there were a few steep sections and many turns. (On the way down they and we used the gully.) We were up through the trees to the bench below the summit face after just about an hour.

Climbing at the tree line (Cirque and Dolomite in the background)We continued to follow the existing up track to the ridge.

Carl breaking trail on the upper ridge of Jimmy Jr. In looking at it later I might set a different route with a few less sharp turns on steep slopes. At noon we stopped for a lunch break and great views of the peaks near Bow Hut.

Carl and Wallace - noon snack breakAnother half hour or so got us to the top. We did not pick the best way to get to the actual summit and had to boot pack up a steep face with lots of snow for about 15-20 meters of vertical.

Climbing the last steps to the summitThe effort was worth it and the views were great. The summit cairn even had a panorama photo identifying 40 or so sights.

Enjoying the view from the summit of Jimmy JrAfter a good break (and some chocolate) it was time for the reward.

Nice snow on the slopes of Mt Jimmy Junior

Wallace skiing the lower slopes of Jimmy Simpson Jr The snow base was very supportive and there was a good layer on top to make nice turns. The slope is fairly steep (35 degrees?) in places, some of us were more at home than others. We descended from the tree line via the avalanche gully described by Chic Scott.

Descending the avalanche gullyFrom the bottom it is a short ski along a creek back to the parking lot from where we could see most of our tracks.

Our turns (and uptrack at left) from the parking lot Many thanks to Kevin (P) and Wallace for joining me, Carl (C/S/P).
