Nihahi Ridge Traverse (458359) Scramble on 27-Aug-2012
Its difficult to say anything new about this hike as its already well described in the Ramblers database. The hike up to and along the ridge was uneventful but views were limited due to the smoky haze presumably from forest fires in BC. The early cool temperature increased as the day progressed and the occasional strong breeze was appreciated. The biggest challenge was in the descent. We aimed directly east and went down a gully directly below the highest bump on the ridge. This involved a slow/tedious descent on large scree with some small rock bands which had to be worked around. The consensus was that we should try a different descent route when we do this scramble again. Kane and Spirko suggest making a descent northward into the Prairie Creek basin. Once down, we made our way through moderate bush to the trail which took us to the intersection of Powderface trail and Prairie Creek where we happily climbed into Clifton’s convertible for the breezy trip back to Little Elbow campground.
My gps recorded a distance of 16.9km and a total elevation gain of 1260m in 8 1/2 hours. Thanks to Clifton for route finding, Carl for photos and Terry for setting a blistering pace. The scribe is Damian.
