Cross Conservation Area, Pine Creek Trail loop Trail Hike on 19-Oct-2

A beautiful fall day with remnants of autumn colors, warm sunshine and fabulous mountain views. We started on a brisk morning, after a short drive, turned our back on the impressive downtown Calgary skyline at the trailhead, and headed around the Fescue and Pine Creek Trails. We learned from the notice board that several bear and cougar sightings had been posted recently, but didn't see any wildlife. What we hoped would be a bear sighting turned out to be only a black cow, first cattle sighting of the day. The ground was dry on the south slopes, with only a few small patches of snow left in a few hollows. The hollows also served to protect the aspen leaves, where many trees still sport good colour. Visual highlights included the teepee on the prairie, the old Stuart homestead, and one of the most extensive mountain views anywhere. We had a long lunch, with a few sleeping on the grass while the rest picked out numerous peaks on the horizon. We were back to the city by 2:30.Participants: Roberta Peach (first Ramblers trip!),Anne Moran, Joyce Tomboulian, Mike Jancovic, Karel Silovsky, Herb Kariel, Bernard Muller, Jone Sobon, Mel and Audrey Kyle, Caroline Potter and Carl Potter (co-ordinator and scribe)
