Hector Gorge Trail Skiing on 29-Jan-2012

I was quite surprised that five members attended this trip because of the long drive and the more mundane aspect of the trip. Perhaps virgin terrain for all but the coordinator was the attractio and it is a nice ski through the trees with no stress as I experienced the first time that I did it. This was the second time and it was somewhat difficult convincing my participants that the first time I did the trip there was no deadfall, just a couple of saplings across the trail. The first kilometer or so had been broken by snowshoers to the Vermilion River but after that it was all our own group efforts breaking trail. This trip turned into a bit of an epic due to reasonably heavy trailbreaking, much more than expected deadfall on the trail and wet snow conditions particularly later in the day which made waxing for grip or glide challenging. We came out @ 6:45pm in the dark. But overall it was a good day although we should probably have turned back @ 3:00pm until the GPS showed us only being 0.5 km from the road. The thinking was we could hitchhike back at the road but when we arrived the oncern about getting a ride with concern about potential time lost if we didn't get one put us into ski back the way we came mode.

Those who participated in the log hopping and deadfall avoidance procedures included Philip, Rosanne, James, Janet and Bob - Coordinator and Scribe.

Thanks for the photos, Philip (only one log hopping photo?)and thanks to everyone else for not lynching the coordinator after too many deadfall avoidance and log hopping procedures.
