Hidden L, Little Richardson NE slope Off-Trail Skiing on 8-Jan-2012

We set off from Fish Creek parking lot at 10:00 am for a brisk climb up the Lake Louise ski out. The weather was cloudy, but there had been a few centimetres of new snow which made for an easy climb. The plan was to work off some Xmas turkey and make a few turns in the slops above Hidden Lake. The backside of Louise was still closed to skiers when we passed by Temple Lodge and blasting was in full swing to release slab avalanches. The wind was very strong as we skied towards Halfway Hut and we could see significant amounts of snow was being transported above treeline. Even open areas of snow in the trees was showing had a firm, wind-compacted layer. Boulder Pass and the slopes below Redoubt Mountain were stripped completely bare of snow. We were all quite thankful to pile into the Halfway Hut to get out of the elements and have some lunch. The north-facing slopes near the lake were in good condition except for the very top which had been exposed to wind. After a few yoyo runs and some rather sweet turns, we all headed down to end our day a Laggan's Bakery for coffee and treats. Thanks to John, Carl, Philip, Alicja, Terry, Bernie and Bob for a very enjoyable day. Coordinator: John.
