Hero Knob Off-trail Skiing on 1-Jan-2012

Looking east from the high point.

Gerald and Doug at the high point.

Norman and Clifton at the high point.

Three runs skied in this area.

Looking down slope for the last of two runs skied here.

Looking up the slope after the last run of the day.

Height gain around 300 m to the high point (elevation at about 2100 m) below the headwall plus maybe another 300 m for four additional climbs to get turns; distance about 5 km return; -21C with a light wind at the parking lot at 9 a.m.; by 3:30 pm about -10C; car to car 5 hours 40 minutes; we left the cars at 9:40; we did not dig a snow profile; exposed slopes tended to be wind affected; no cracks or sudden downward displacements observed and no natural avalanche activity was seen during the day; sheltered skiing offered up to boot top powder skiing (20-25 cm). Thanks a lot to Doug, Clifton, and Gerald for a great start to the new year.
