Chickadee (Whymper) Valley Off-trail Skiing on 17-Mar-2011

With temperatures just below zero and the sun frequently peeking through scattered clouds we started up a well consolidated trail that quickly brought us into the beautiful open Chickadee Valley.

At the end of the open meadows we had a break and surveyed the plentiful yo-yo potential around us. Based on the avalanche rating (considerable for the Alpine) coupled with sun exposure of the south facing slopes and gullies we decided to backtrack to the north facing slopes between Mt. Whymper and the No Name Peak east of it. This was exactly what Stan had been suggesting all along but it was not until we could see the well hidden treasure that the group got it!

The four Telemark and one AT (after telemark) skiers experienced absolutely perfect snow conditions and had two great runs before skiing back to the cars for a planned 6pm return to Calgary.
