Mt Brett Scramble on 5-Sep-2009

So, what was all the fuss about for this trip? Just over 11 hours car to summit and return by foot. Excellent views, good weather, company, scrambling and some bushwacking.

We left Calgary at 6.00am and left on foot from Redearth car park at 7.45am up the fireroad. The temperature was +3c. About 1.25 hours later we reached grid ref 794719, nad 1927 given to us by Christine from her trip last week. Actually we overshot it and had to backtrack so 1.25 hours to this point is an estimate. 794719 is in the middle of nowhere, but marks the bottom of Brett's NW ridge. Then about 1.5 hours steeply up the ridge with some bushwacking led to larch trees and the broad open NW ridge of Mt Brett. We could now see our objective.

We took our first lunch around 12 noon just before the ridge narrowed. Soon after we donned helmets and put away the poles for the scrambling. (none below this point). The rock was loose and the ridge narrowed in a few spots with exposure.

Higher up we avoided one tricky bit by dropping 20 m down the SW (climber's right) side, but otherwise it was straightforward moderate (SC6) scrambling to the broad summit at 2.00pm (6.25 hours up).

We signed the register (4th group this year), took many photos, ate lunch before starting back down at 2.30pm. The views were excellent with little smoke and peaks such as Assiniboine, Joffre, King George, Ball were clearly visible.

We returned along the ridge to just above treeline, where we decided to follow a game trail into the drainage to the NE (skiers right). Initially this went well, but lower down we encountered much deadfall before reaching the Redearth "road" at 6.00pm. We turned right and arrived back at the cars by 7.00pm, a lovely day. Participants Gilles, John, Gary, Susan, Carl, c&s David. Photos later.

Note that some bushwacking is inevitable and is definately best done in dry weather. The alder would be soaking when wet. Ridge or drainage? The drainage had more deadfall. MY preference would be the ridge direct from 794719 (NAD 1927).

Note from John: Thanks for a good day David - I thought the ridge walk was worthwhile and scenic even if you do n't make the peak. For those interested I noted the GR where the descent game trail came out on the Redearth fire road - some felt it might be a better ascent (pick your "bushwhacking" poison) - not that this peak will get a lot of traffic but for what it is worth it is GR 799723 NAD 27.
