Tokumm Creek Off-trail Skiing on 3-Feb-2008

A gorgeous day on the other side of the divide!
Eight of us from Calgary were joined by the three from Banff at the Marble Canyon trailhead. The temperature was around -13, and the skies were sparkling. For the record it does appear that the Marble Canyon "tourist" trail is back in operation after being closed for several years. We set out just before 10 am.

At the last canyon bridge we descended to Tokumm creek and followed it rather than the summer hiking trail for several kilometers.

The views along the creek are spectacular but the trail breaking was fairly onerous. And we didn't have Kaare along so the going was slow. Eventually we came to a spot where the summer trail comes down to the creek and so we continueed on that trail because it had been trail-broken. We had a very pleasant lunch at noon and then five continued on in search of the Fay hut turn-off.

We were about a kilometer short of that destination when our pre-arranged turnaround time of 2:00 came up. The earlier turn-arounds were back at the parking lot around 3:00, in time to witness the towing operations around a flipped-over vehicle. The five were back just after 4:00. It did cloud over after 1:00, the temperature climbed to -7 by the afternoon.
