Powderface Ridge from North Trail Hike on 5-Sep-2004
On Sunday of the long weekend a cozy group of four enjoyed a lovely hike to the Powerface area. We started at a point about 6 km up the Powerface Trail, just past the end of the paved road. There was Herb (our fearless leader), Madeleine and her pooch Skyler, Alastair and myself Caroline. We hiked in the early morning chill to the tundra-like meadows to the north of Powerface. From here we enjoyed beautiful vistas which included Mt. Yamnuska to the north, turning to view Banded Peak, Mts. Cornwall, Glasgow and Prairie Mtn, the Nihahi Ridge, and yet again to see the city core of Calgary in the distance. The day was sunny but we stood in a cool wind at the top. We found a protected spot in the lee of a rocky ridge amongst a tree grove and stopped for our lunch break. On starting our return we met several other groups coming up, some with children and many with dogs. Despite the cool lateness of the season we still spotted several wildflowers such as asters, potentilla, harebells, false dandelions, onion; but, what amazed us mostly were the mushrooms. We saw at least six varieties, but most plentiful were orangy-yellow mushrooms everywhere. We saw them all the way up, blanketing the forest floor, and again all the way down (not too surprising since we returned the same way!) Herb was surprised at how full the creek was, which we had followed both up (and down) our hike. On our return to the cars we were enjoying a more comfortable 14 degrees. Caroline Collier
