Surveyor's Ridge 592179, Mt Ware loop Off-Trail hike on 8-Sep-2023
A really fine day in the Gorge Creek area as somewhat threatening afternoon clouds did not release any rain on us, although some was seen in the mountains to the south. Four of us headed off at a little after 9am under sunny skies and it was easy going along dry trails. At the point where we were leaving the trail to head off-trail up to Surveyor's Ridge we spotted some of the local residents:

Spruce grouse near Surveyor's Ridge There were five in all and we saw a further three during the rest of the day. Shortly after entering the forest a white tail deer went bounding away. There were lots of mushrooms present in the forest, some of which were beyond our identification skills:

Odd white fungus attached to black rock After a steepish climb to the summit we had great views in all directions and enjoyed the rare situation of zero wind while we dined on lunch:

Cheryl, Barbara & Sonja on sunny Surveyor Ridge We continued down the ridge to the south while noting building clouds to the west, but the most threatening ones did not track over us. The trail down and then up to the meadow west of Mt Ware is now pretty well defined from the horse traffic from Anchor D's trail rides. The climb up to the top of Mt Ware was made through some messy scree sections, where, lo and behold, we met John who had cancelled earlier as the circuit might be a little long but then undertook the shorter out and back trip to Mt Ware:

The group + bonus member on Mt. Ware The full group descended through the scree on the east side then muddled along the ridge that led to Little Ware. After a short break the descent through the forest was uneventful and we were back at the cars around 5pm. On the drive out there were many cows but also some wildlife:

Black bear along Gorge Creek Road

A few of the many sheep along the Sheep River Road Also seen were mule deer and many hawks on utliity poles along Hwy 22. Not seen were other hikers, except in the parking lot.
Thanks to an engaging group of converationalists for joining me. Participants: Barbara, Sonja, Cheryl (bear photo) and John. Ron C/S/P
