Amazing what a difference a 45 minute drive from town and a bit of elevation gain makes! Unlike the overcast day in Calgary, we had picture-postcard views and great conditions on our hike up Prairie Mountain, and back via the West Ridge. The 4 of us met at the trailhead (Hwy 66 Winter Gate), where there lots of cars. A large private group (including a few Ramblers) left the trailhead a few minutes before us (most had driven individually as well). We practiced social distancing throughout the trip, which was not onerous (see my forum post for more detail on lessons learned).

There was very little wind at the top, and we enjoyed a 1st lunch by the summit cairn.

Our second lunch was on the big log in the meadow near Prairie Creek trail - with our small group, we were all able to sit on it with lots of space between us. We wore spikes all day, which were very good for both up and down (although the warming snow in the afternoon caused some clumping). Most of us carried our snowshoes, expecting to need them going down off the west ridge, but there was a well trodden trail down, so snowshoes weren't needed.

Well packed trail off West Ridge

Thanks to Douglas,Susan and Ernie for joining me for this healthy day in the mountains and respecting our clubs new guidelines, from Barb (c,s,p)
