Boulder Hut 2018

We had a great trip. We met at the lodge at the base of Kimberley ski resort Sunday morning and split into two groups for the flight in.

When we got to the hut it had been snowing for weeks, there was fresh powder almost everywhere. The snow pack was complex with several buried persistent weak layers, but there is enough terrain that we could find safe places to ski.

We skied everyday except the the day we flew out. It snowed most of the week, over half a meter accumulated until it cleared Thursday night. It was warm while it snowed, -4 to – 10. It dropped to -20 the last two nights, with highs around -10 to -15 during the day. We had mostly blue skies and sun on Friday and Saturday. The hut owners live in a cabin nearby and were extremely helpful, as was the custodian.

Two dogs are also in residence, Rosie and a four month old puppy, Luna.

Anita

Anita cooked wonderful meals, at least one person kept a log of what they ate rather than what they skied.

Ed had been there last year, and did a great job of navigating and finding safe places to ski everyday.

Thanks to everyone for helping make it such a pleasant trip!

Fresh Tracks in Boulder Basin

On a more serious note, one of the participants had a health issue that could have turned out much worse. She complained of shortness of breath while skinning up in the morning last day. After using her puffer it wasn't any better so three of us went down to the hut. She thought it might be acid reflux, so she took some tums, and I talked her into taking aspirin in case it was a cardiac problem. She seemed much better after an hour. She decided it must be acid reflux, two of us went back out and skied. On returning to Calgary she went to a physician (after working on Monday), she now has a stent! I recommend everyone carry some non-enteric coated aspirin, the dose for an adult is 325 mg.
