Thunder Mtn Scramble on 11-Jul-2023

Thunder mountain is an interesting ridge hike. We had no difficulty finding a trail up the initial steep section as this has become a popular hike. The weather forecast wasn’t as accurate as we would have liked since we were expecting more sun and less threatening thunder storms. The storms passed by to the northeast initially but soon clouds were headed our way. We managed to have a short lunch break in the sun about 2/3s of the way up the ridge before deciding to head down. Within 5 minutes the rain started, then ended, then restarted, on and off until we were back at the cars.

At the base of the ridge is a stone structure of unknown origin or purpose. Some of the boulders used to create it are very large and would have required a machine or enormous manpower to maneuver into place.

This ridge hike is a very worthwhile objective despite the 2.5 hr drive to get there from NW Calgary.
