Good early season scramble for the Saturday of the May long weekend with Covid-19 restrictions in place but Kananaskis Country only opened 2 weeks previously. More snow than normal for the time of year.

We each drove separately to start hiking from the trailhead about 8.35am. It was pleasantly warm and with a few breaks we gained the ridge and followed the beaten trial upwards. For some it was their first hike of the season after 2 months of travel restrictions (for Covid-19). We enjoyed a few breaks for clothing adjustment and refreshments before summiting at 10.45am. In places the trail was snow covered but micro-spikes were not needed. Some wore helmets as there were also a few other hikers even descending at this early hour.

Although a bit cool in the wind we enjoyed lunch and the views. Since no-one was madly keen to try for the north summit we started back down at 11.15am reaching the cars without incident by 1.00pm. IMO, although we passed other hikers going up, everyone was courtious about 2 metre spacing etc. The trailhead ditch was quite busy with cars

Busy parking at Wasootch Peak trail head (opposite Nakiska turnoff on highway 40).

. However Barrier Lake had vehicles parkied in the ditch on both sides of the road for about 200 metres north of the turnoff and also somewhat to the south.

Good day, great group, nice to get out of the city. 6km, 900m in 4:30 hours.
