David Thompson Country Off-Trail hike on 5-Aug-2019

David Thompson Country is not on the radar for many mountain folk, but after my 4th visit there, this time with a wonderful group of Ramblers, "co-adventurers", I can say that it's one of my favourite trips, in part because of its "novelty" and also because of the many outdoor options available. We made good use of our time, with an evening walk in the Kootenay Plains Ecological Reserve, a hike up Tuff Puff to Kinglet Lake, another hike to Allstones Lake and a bracing but wonderfully welcomed swim in Abraham Lake. Though not part of the official trip, 4 Ramblers spent a day paddling from Saskatchewan River Crossing to Abraham Lake, certainly one of the most beautiful day trips I've ever experienced, in a land of many amazing experiences. The flowers were really showing well, leading to no little confusion amongst those trying to identify them. We had some rain, thunder and lightening, but nothing to stop the fun.

Most of us camped at Two O'Clock Creek, a pleasant site near to several trailheads. No showers there. Free-camping options are plentiful and many offer splendid views of Abraham Lake. Some even have outhouses! Cell phone service can be found at one spot, located east of the David Thompson Resort.
