Rummel Ridge snowshoe Snowshoeing on 7-Apr-2018

We left a dismal atmosphere in YYC behind and drove into brilliant sunshine, exactly what the mountain weather forecast predicted. Itʼs amazing how milder weather and sunshine can substantially improve oneʼs mood. Anyhow, the trailhead was approximately 200 metres north of Mt Engadine on Smith Dorrien Hwy. After pulling over we hopped out of the vehicles and ʻshoed up, grateful there was a packed trail at our disposal. This didnʼt last long, close to 600 metres in it was apparent we missed the bridge that crossed Rummel Creek. Rather than backtrack, we left the trail, crossed and fought our way up a steep slope to gain the rib of our ridge.

Higher up we followed a faint trail that suddenly stopped close to 250 metres from the top. We plodded onward and reached the summit around 1 p.m. Even though high clouds rolled in, the panoramic view of snow covered peaks was exceptional. The group lounged around for an hour on a windless summit before heading down.

On the drive home Hwy 742 manifested itself into a rutted stream of sloppy brown muck. It was messy. A huge shout out to Zora for helping with route finding and to Damian for the GPS. Also, thank you Susan A, Margo, Suzy, Damian, Yoko, Zorica, Ivan, Janice and guest Kari for joining me on a great snowshoe in the mountains. Also, Spektor the dog.
