Pilot Mtn Scramble on 3-Jul-2015
Pilot Mountain via the Spirko Route was a fun and interesting scramble. We set off from the Red earth Creek parking lot at 9 AM and biked the 5 km to the trail head. The trail took us straight up through the trees on a soft mossy surface. After breaking out of the trees we ascended the ledges to a point above the rockwall/waterfall. From there the route took us up a long broad meadowed slope to a pinnacle, which we bypassed to the right. After ascending a broad talus slope the scrambling began - and continued to the summit.

The crux involves ascending a chimney behind a massive flake and traversing an exposed ledge at the top of the chimney.
Greg traversing the ledge at the top of the flake
From there it was straight forward moderate scrambling to the summit platform.

Pilot Mountain due to it's height and distance from other peaks provides great panoramic views.

The great scenery and warm weather resulted in a long lunch break of over an hour on the summit.

We retraced our steps back down our up route without incident.

The bike ride back out to the parking lot took us only 15 minutes! Thanks to Arnold, Bill and Greg for joining me, Kevin (S/C}, on the long but very interesting scramble.
Total distance 18 km, net elevation gain 1550 m and total time 9 hrs 45 minutes. This route is a borderline difficult scramble.
