Muley & Carey Ridges Off-Trail Hike on 2-Mar-2013
We parked our car at the Kananaskis Boundary sign, and headed up the trail at 9:50AM. The weather was sunny and a mild, 12’C. We did not encounter much snow, which made this trip a spring hike. We hiked up Muley Ridge, took a snack-stop near its summit, enjoyed the sun (there was no wind) and admired the view.

Threepoint Mountain (r. 2595m), from Muley Ridge. Bluerock Mountain's northerly outlier at left. After our break, we decided to do some exploring, heading NW down Muley Ridge into the valley across a small frozen creek, and up the first outlier. Here we enjoyed the view again and sat down in the sun for lunch. We made our group-picture, proudly displaying our trophy

Carl, Doug, Barb and Cornelis on Muley Ridge NW1 Outlier. After lunch, we descended the first outlier and climbed up the second, lower outlier. Again, the brush was not very dense going down, the going was easy although we encountered some snow and had to circumnavigate some deadfall. The gentle climb up was on grass, the temperature still mild. As we watched, snow-storms were closing in on the Mountains. From here, we could already see our objective across the valley; the large Fir Tree on Carey Ridge. There was some underbrush on the way down, and a frozen creek at the valley bottom, but we easily made it onto the grassy slope up Carey Ridge to the Fir Tree. From the Fir Tree we hiked ~3km South on Carey Ridge, looking back West onto both the Muley Ridge Outliers, until we intersected with the boundary fence. During the day, we saw lots of evidence of Moose and Elk, but only saw a grouse cock ruffling its feathers, and some crows already building a nest. The temperature was still mild, with some sun forcing its way through a thin veil, but Calgary was already in a cold fog.
