Windtower 200497 via West Wind Pass Scramble on 30-Jun-2012

Success finally! The coordinator had "failed" to get Rimwall Summit four previous times.
We ascended Rimwall summit quite quickly using an alternate route that the coordinator had found on a previous unsuccessful attempt. Within about 15 minutes we veered left off the West Wind Pass trail and followed intermittent flagging up the rib that is to the left (west) of the trail. Where the trees start to thin out we traversed left, easily crossed the drainage shown in Kane's description and then ascended the rib to its west. In doing this we easily passed two groups of four that were on the conventional route. On a steady pace with only a few short breaks we were at the summit in just over two hours.
It was quite breezy and a bit cool at the summit, somewhat overcast but with great views all around. We didn't linger very long. As we were leaving a group of four including Rambler Kerry showed up. We returned via the same route. This alternate route also avoids some of the scrambling to get from the West Wind Pass trail up to the ridge proper. It does NOT avoid the easy scrambling that is required on the last 100 m of climb. We were back at the car after just over four hours. There were a few rain drops as we rejoined the trail and it looked like it might rain heavily fairly soon.

The coordinator forgot his camera and is hoping for a summit shot from one of the others. Many thanks to Jeannette and Wallace for joining me, Carl (C/S).

PS The previous "failures" were one quit at Shouldice due to poor weather and only one other participant, two changes of heart when we didn't see the summit from the highway and chose to do Pigeon or Barrier Lookout, and one turnaround 2/3 of the way up due to a thunderstorm in the immediate area.
