Healy Creek & Monarch Ramparts loop Off-trail Skiing on 22-Feb-2010

Ho Hum! Yet another spectacular day in the mountains. Philip had had a great trip on Friday on this fabulous tour. And so three more Ramblers ventured out on Monday. At the bottom of Healy meadows there was an up track heading straight toward the Ramparts (rather than to the high point of the Healy Pass trail). We followed it for a while, but it topped out at a small hill near Healy Lake. We then broke trail up a fairly gentle slope avoiding the furthest north bump on the Monarch Ramparts and the steep climb up to it from Healy Pass.

This had us up onto the Ramparts and on Philip's track a little over three hours from the parking lot.

At the south end of the Ramparts on the descent towards Eohippus Lake we saw only eight ski tracks. So it seems that no one skied the traverse over the weekend. For that matter there didn't seem to be any old tracks either.

We followed Philips group across under the Ramparts and down a handy drainage picking up the Healy Creek trail about 1/3 of the way between the meadows and the Simpson junction. We were back at Sunshine parking for hot chocolate in a few minutes over 7 hours. That time is largely because we only had to break trail for a few hundred meters.

Many thanks to Yolande and Wallace for joining me Carl (C/S), and to Philip and his crew for breaking trail on an excellent route on Friday.
