Despite early morning fog patches and hazy conditions, it turned out to be a lovely summer day in the mountains on the Mount Indefatigable Outlier.

Lower Kananaskis Lake

There was a large sign across the trail saying it was permanently decommissioned because it was in bear habitat, but the rough condition of the trail may have also influenced that decision. The lower part of the trail was exceedingly eroded, and in the past there have been accidents in which people have fallen off the cliff. We ground upward to the subalpine meadows, which were a riot of colour.

Mount Indefatigable from the outlier

We took the ridge trail to the summit, where we had a shortened lunch, as the sun went behind the clouds and a cold wind came up. After watching some young people climb the main peak up some very scary terrain, we dropped to the col and back into the subalpine.

There were one or two slips and falls on the steep ball bearing gravel, but otherwise the descent went smoothly. The parking lot was almost full when we arrived, but cars were parked way down the road when we returned at 3:15. Everyone enjoyed ice cream after the hike, at Fortress Junction. On the drive back we saw a coyote.
