Heart Mtn Horseshoe loop Scramble on 24-Jun-2010

Our mid-week crew of seven Ramblers started hiking at 9:30 AM in warm shirt sleeve weather. All but one of us had done this trip before. On the way up it was hard to look up because the sun was right in our eyes, so we just watched our feet work their way up the steep slope and distracted ourselves by telling stories. The little cliff band and gully provided some scrambling fun. We had an early lunch in sunshine on the first summit. The forecast called for possible thunderstorms in the afternoon, so we kept our eyes on the clouds to the West. We decided to have another lunch on the last peak of the horseshoe, from where we could dash down in a hurry in case a thunderstorm hit. The hike along the summit ridge was leisurely and almost entirely snow-free (only 10 m in snow)

.On the highest summit I was informed that we were on McEwan Peak. Wonderful! Now I can add another mountain to my peak-bagging list without having done anything new. We had a look at a descent route into Heart Creek valley from this peak – something I had to do on a very windy day years ago.

Another leisurely lunch was enjoyed on the last peak and no thunderstorm interrupted it.

Then we let gravity propel us downwards. The woods below were green and lush and violets and clematis bloomed by the trail side. We had a very enjoyable hike and reached the car before the rain. Participants: Lech, Gary, Peter, Bernie, Kathy, Nancy and Rita (c/s).
