Trip Date: 20-Jun-2010
Activity: Off-Trail Hike
Destination: Little Lougheed
Report:

Its funny how things go! Last year I called this trip and had 0 shows (not including myself, of course). That's right nada! This year 13 participants, a number more than I had anticipated. "Never say never to a trip!" is perhaps a good way to look at any trip, I've found. Maybe Carl VM's note of endorsement about it being a worthwhile trip for views also helped as most people on the trip were working types, not mid-weekers. Poor Francisco had 0 shows for his trip today, and so gladly joined our trip. It was new for him also, so I think he was happy to come along.

As a chunk of this trip would involve off-trail travel through trees and bush and we had quite a wide range of participant skills, I was a little apprehensive of possibly losing someone with such a large group. However, everything went well and with Francisco sweeping at the rear we got everyone safely through the trees and boulder field on the way up, without any wayward souls.

Interestingly, no one in the group had done this trip before, so we spent a little time getting ourselves oriented and heading in the right direction (perhaps an extra 10-20 minutes) after we left the climbers trail. We eventually found the boulder field, which is helpful to the ascent, without too much difficulty. Once there it was just head straight up with a short little rock fin which could be scrambled or bypassed on the way up, depending on your desire.

We were at the summit between 12:30 and 12:45pm after a 10:25am start, through patches of fresh snow the last 500 feet. Lunch was held on the summit as we took in the spectacular views of the south end of Spray Lakes and the #1 and #2 summits of Mount Lougheed.

As it turned out this summit proved to be a good choice for today. As we looked at Windtower and how much more snow it had and how the snow was lower down as well, we were glad to be on Little Lougheed.

Heading Down from the Summit

The return trip was uneventful and a break was taken half way down to once more relax and take in the views. James' help with sweeping the slower people on the way down made my job easier.

It was nice to see some faces missing from trips more recently, plus a number of regulars both of which included Alda, Jeannine, Janice, Corrina, Russ, James, Jeanette, Francisco, Yoko, Janet, Becky and Yolande. Thanks everyone for coming out and making it a bit of a social trip as well as a summit bagging experience (albeit a relatively small summit).
